A beautiful semis from Corinth showing Melikertes
Lot 928
CORINTHIA. Corinth. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Semis (Bronze, 16 mm, 3.32 g, 11 h), time of Tiberius, 32-33 (?). COR Pegasos flying right. Rev. Melikertes, nude, lying on dolphin swimming right. BCD Corinth 397 (same dies). RPC I 1170. Rare. A very attractive example of this lovely issue with a beautiful green patina. Good very fine.

From a Swiss collection, formed before 2005.

The reverse of this interesting issue alludes to the founding of the Isthmian Games by Sisyphus on the spot where a dolphin laid down the body of his nephew Melikertes-Palaimon below a pine tree.
